Is Ruffling Feathers Bill Maher’s Second Nature?

Going by the things Bill Maher says to and against people, whether he is the one interviewing or being interviewed, you may wonder whether he enjoys making others uncomfortable. Here is a sampling of some of the things he has said in the recent past.

When speaking about presidential candidates and comparing Sarah Palin and Mitchel Batchmann, Maher said Bachmann could possibly lead the GOP. “At least she’s somebody who can read,” he said. On the other hand, he said that although he was not sure who he would pick, he believed Palin could become president, explaining that “This Republican party is not your father’s Republican party.”

Questioning Chaz Bono, who is transgendered, Bill Maher wanted to know about the technology behind the process in an interesting way. He mentioned some of the things technology has made possible and then asked: “How are they doing with dicks?” He also told Bono that he was a “straight white man, high five!” Although Bono declined the high five, he responded to the ‘dick’ question quite calmly.

Bono explained it wasn’t as well as expected because there’s more money in making an iPod that parks a car than in “making a functioning penis for a transgendered man.”

This in itself brought another controversial topic. Bill blamed the situation Bono described on the “f***ing republicans.” The statement was probably meant to anger Anne Coulter, who was also present. However, she just laughed.

On another topic, Bill equated the Casey Anthony verdict to Republican thinking. “Yes Republican base,” he said Friday on his Real Time show. “You are just like that jury. It’s pathetically clear who’s killing the middle class but you keep letting them get away with murder.”

Such comments cost him his program at ABC, Politically Incorrect, in 2002. He called Americans cowards who lobbied cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away. On the other hand, he said the terrorists in the 9/11 planes were not cowardly.

Does Bill Maher enjoy ruffling feathers or he just speaks his mind?
